The 9th Devonshire battalion had arrived in France in July, 1915 to join 20 Brigade, 7th Division. In September, 1915 the battalion had fought at The Battle of Loos and after that had moved to the Givenchy area of the front line. At some time, as yet not known, Frederick Colwell had been wounded whilst serving with the battalion and was being brought back to England aboard the Hospital Ship Anglia when, on 17th November, 1915 she hit a mine laid by the German submarine UC-5 when just off the coast near Folkestone. Within 15 minutes the ship sank and he was one of the 164 people that lost their lives. |
